Sunny’s Cantina announces closure this weekend

The proprietors of Sunny’s Cantina have announced via social media that the establishment will cease operations after service this Sunday, October 13.

Sunny’s Cantina is co-owned by Steve VanderKolb, Tom Galbraith, and chef Andy Roesch, who also manage Felix’s Pizza Pub, which will continue to operate in Dogtown.

In a recent social media post, they shared, “We have made the sudden and difficult decision to close our doors at Sunny’s Cantina. A month ago, we were planning on giving it another year at least, but it became clear these last few weeks that now is the right time.”

They expressed gratitude towards their staff, both current and former, who supported the restaurant through tough times, starting with its opening just four days prior to pandemic-related shutdowns. “Just unfortunate timing from the start,” the message stated. “Nothing more to say. We wished it had a different conclusion.”

Reflecting on the Franz Park restaurant before it opened, VanderKolb mentioned, “The usual favorites were present: burgers, pizza, American… But there was a void for Mexican cuisine.” He then proposed naming the restaurant after his daughter, Sunny. “Initially, my partners considered Dogtown Cantina as a sensible option, but once they contemplated all the positive associations of a name like Sunny’s Cantina, they agreed.”

After showcasing his unique take on New York-style pizza at Felix’s, Roesch introduced his version of Mexican-inspired dishes at Sunny’s, including fajita fried rice, a tostada stack, and a house-made chorizo burger with grilled pineapple, guacamole, pico de gallo, Chihuahua cheese, and sriracha crème served on Texas toast.

“Thank you once more for all your support,” the announcement concluded. “Now come enjoy some of co-owner Chef Andy’s incredible food along with a margarita. We invite you to support this establishment and its staff one last time this Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.”
