The Saint Louis Zoo is a cherished destination for families in St. Louis, so it’s no surprise that residents are excited about the upcoming attraction, Destination Discovery, which is set to launch in 2026.
With construction now in progress, the Zoo has shared new photos and video renderings of their plans for the site.
These visuals showcase the intended experiences within the attraction, featuring animal habitats and activities developed with contributions from “children and families from various backgrounds,” as mentioned in the press release.
“Community feedback was crucial in shaping the plans for this new, engaging experience designed for visitors of all ages and abilities. We aim to create an environment that facilitates empathy towards animals and nature through play, interactive exhibits, and educational adventures, inspiring future conservationists,” said Saint Louis Zoo Director Michael Macek in the release.
The planned features for the 2.8-acre site are crafted with the youngest visitors in mind, focusing on accessible, close-up interactions and hands-on learning environments. Key elements include:
- The Underground Cities habitats allowing close encounters with ground-dwelling animals such as prairie dogs and patagonian mara.
- Freshwater Wilderness, where the significance of clean water will be showcased through interactive habitats and play areas, including a large splash pad that transforms into a snow playground in winter and areas for viewing North American river otters swimming above.
- Forest Families, which will educate visitors about wildlife living alongside humans, featuring habitats for Coati, Tasmanian devils, and Babydoll sheep.
- Wildlife Overlook Boardwalk, presenting panoramic views of the site and hosting live presentations, surprise animal encounters, and interactive experiences.
- A multi-level climbing structure enabling young guests to explore a monarch chrysalis, bounce on a giant spiderweb, slide down a caterpillar slide, and swing on a lacewing egg.
- Animal Ambassadors providing insights during close encounters and keeper talks.
- The expansion and renovation of The Living World building into a new two-story facility dedicated to educational programming, including the innovative Saint Louis Zoo Preschool, which will offer classes year-round.
- A new Discovery Center as an indoor play area where children can learn about “caring for and sharing with wildlife neighbors,” featuring a makerspace, pretend-play zone, nature exchange, habitat-building activities, and an indoor animal encounter area.
- A gift shop and café located near the water play area, providing snacks, souvenirs, and eco-friendly products. Facilities such as changing rooms, a waterplay drying booth, lactation rooms, and accessible restrooms will be available throughout the attraction.
Destination Discovery is being developed on the former site of the Emerson Dinoroarus and Emerson Children’s Zoo, with groundbreaking occurring in late August. A focus on sustainability has guided the construction from the outset.
The development team is committed to preserving native trees and plants, as well as recycling materials wherever feasible. This commitment aligns with the overarching goals of Destination Discovery: “Destination Discovery seeks to inspire curiosity and empathy in children, nurturing a profound understanding of the biodiversity that shares our planet. The design of the buildings, habitats, and landscapes aims to forge connections with nature and propose solutions to environmental challenges,” explained David McGuire, William Bernoudy Vice President of Architecture and Planning and Chief Architect, Saint Louis Zoo, in the press release.
