Major digital expansion of SLM’s local journalism

Start your mornings with a fresh take on the day’s top local news.

Launching this summer, St. Louis Daily will provide a smart, succinct look at the metro area’s major stories, with insights and analysis from award-winning journalists Sarah Fenske and Ryan Krull. The newsletter will offer an informative, entertaining guide to everything you need to know about the region—all in one place and delivered right to your inbox.

“The launch of St. Louis Daily is part of SLM’s ongoing commitment to community journalism,” says publisher/editor-in-chief Jarrett Medlin. As the metro area’s only region-wide, locally owned and operated media company, SLM aims to connect St. Louisans with the region’s best and each other through its suite of newsletters, podcasts, St. Louis Magazine, stlmag.com, events, and more. “With Sarah and Ryan’s immense knowledge and journalistic skills, we look forward to taking our next big step.”

Fenske joins SLM as executive editor, overseeing St. Louis Daily and a forthcoming podcast. “I’ve been inspired by the new ways that SLM is connecting with St. Louis, and I can’t wait to bring a daily dose of local news into your inbox and your earbuds,” says Fenske. “I’m excited to join SLM’s terrific team of journalists and reunite with some wildly talented colleagues.”

Fenske previously served as executive editor of Big Lou Media and Euclid Media Group, where she oversaw editorial content for a group of city and regional publications, including the Riverfront Times. Before that time, she was host of St. Louis on the Air, St. Louis Public Radio’s flagship public affairs talk show, which won a regional Edward R. Murrow for best news documentary. In addition to earlier stints at the RFT, she served as editor-in-chief of LA Weekly and a columnist for the Phoenix New Times, where she won multiple national awards for column writing as well as a Livingston Award for her investigation into mismanagement of the local housing authority. She’s also a regular panelist on Nine PBS’ Donnybrook, host of The Legal Roundtable on St. Louis Public Radio, and executive director of the River City Journalism Fund.

Krull joins SLM as staff writer, where he will contribute to the daily newsletter, among other in-depth features and offerings. Krull was previously a staff writer at the Riverfront Times, where he regularly reported on crucial community issues, including the circuit attorney’s office, policing, ballot access, and more. An Association of Alternative Newsmedia award winner, his work has received support from the Fund for Investigative Journalism and Columbia University’s Ira A. Lipman Center for Journalism and Civil and Human Rights. Prior to joining the staff of the RFT, he was an assistant teaching professor at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, where he continues to teach in the Department of Communication & Media as an adjunct professor.

“I couldn’t be more excited to work with this stellar group of colleagues, old and new,” says Krull. “I can’t wait to help shape the new daily newsletter and hope to live up to SLM’s long history of deep-dive reporting.”
