There’s a new can’t-miss event series for St. Louis area families: Movie Nights at the Westport Plaza.
Not only can guests enjoy beloved movies, but the entertainment also leaps off the screen and into the Plaza’s new green space for an evening of activities and fun.
Historically known for its nightlife scene, Westport Plaza kicked off its inaugural Movie Night in May, amidst efforts to rebrand as a family-friendly entertainment area. “The green space as a whole is new, and we went into this year with the intention of providing these types of family events,” says Cameron Schoeffel, Westport Plaza’s director of sales and entertainment. “We have one Movie Night under our belt thus far, and it was a wonderful success. We’re not only excited to expound upon that throughout the series, but we’re also working to expand our offerings throughout the year.”
Movie Nights at the Plaza will continue to be held the second Friday of every month through October with marquee movies that make for a perfect night out as a family. The event continues on June 14 with The Little Mermaid (2023).
Movie Nights at Westport Plaza involve more than just a film screening—it’s a full-fledged family affair. Alongside the feature film, children can delight in face-painting and caricatures, engage in a variety of yard games such as oversized Jenga and Connect 4, and even meet some of their favorite characters. “During the first event, my 4-year-old and I both got our faces painted—twice,” says Schoeffel.
And what’s a movie without concessions? Soda Fountain Express serves delicious to-go meals from its standard menu, as well as Movie Night specials, candy, and ice cream. Ordering is also convenient, with QR codes available to submit an online order from the green space. For those ages 21 and over, a bar features a variety of refreshing options, inculding beer, wine, and canned cocktails.
Guests can also visit any of the other tenants in Westport Plaza, including the newly opened 360 Westport rooftop bar and lounge, Trainwreck Saloon, Westport Social, Drunken Fish, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, and more.
Movie Night attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets and folding chairs. Outside food and drinks are not permitted.
Schoeffel says Westport Plaza is also looking to partner with other tenants, such as the Rawlings Experience Retail Store, on future events. “As a whole, Westport Plaza is very much in a redefining phase,” says Schoeffel. “St. Louis remembers the Westport Plaza from 10 or 20 years ago, when it was more of a nightlife scene,” Schoeffel says. “We’re in the process of redefining what these venues are as a whole and how we can cater to the masses.”
Schoeffel’s team is working on more family-friendly events in the the green space, including for the Fourth of July, Oktoberfest, holidays, and more. “We’re trying to recreate or reimagine Westport Plaza as a destination plaza,” says Schoeffel, “that everyone can enjoy.”
