Considering a head spa treatment? Discover the latest wellness trend around St. Louis

If you find that scalp massages are the highlight of your hair appointments, you might want to try a head spa treatment. Beyond providing immediate relaxation, experts suggest that this all-encompassing service can enhance scalp and hair health, encourage hair growth, and boost overall well-being.

Often referred to as “scalp facials,” these treatments have gained immense popularity this year, with luxurious halo sprinklers trending on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. However, the concept is not new; it has its roots in Japanese wellness traditions, where head spa techniques have provided holistic benefits for centuries.

Haven Salon & HeadSpa in Brentwood has broadened its head spa services in recent years. Owner Tina Ratsaboutseua notes that she has been applying similar methods with her clients for nearly 20 years, incorporating Indian holistic practices like ayurvedic head massage.

“I concentrate on the marma points on the scalp and temple areas, which are linked to calming the nervous system and alleviating stress,” she explains. “By activating these points, clients can enjoy profound relaxation and reduced anxiety.”

Her head spa therapies have assisted clients dealing with alopecia, who sought medical referrals to complement their hair growth treatments. Additionally, she has addressed hair loss caused by stress, COVID-19 infection, and hormonal fluctuations.

“Each head spa session is tailored to the individual client, whether we’re focusing on hair follicle stimulation, an herbal scalp detox, or a scalp massage aimed at enhancing cognitive function,” Ratsaboutseua mentions, highlighting just a few possibilities. “Some clients appreciate the mind-body connection, while others seek holistic healing.”

Tasha Thurmond, founder of Salon Elite in Ellisville, emphasizes the comprehensive benefits of head spa treatments: “When performed correctly, they open your sinuses–you’ll feel like you can breathe easier. Increased blood circulation to your head brings a refreshing sensation to your overall wellbeing.”

Every head spa package at Salon Elite consists of a detoxifying shampoo, intensive scalp and hair conditioning, infused water halo rinse, and massages. Thurmond explains that scalp facials can nourish hair and foster growth not just for those experiencing hair thinning or loss, but also for clients wishing to lengthen their locks. The salon’s Hair Loss Center offers advanced treatment options for more severe cases.

The head spa pods at the salon resemble something from a sci-fi movie, nestled in a dimly lit, blue-tinted environment. “Fitted with full-body massaging functions, water halos, and steam capsules, our head spas provide the ultimate pampering,” the website states. The pods, introduced nearly a year ago, have sparked enough interest to attract some clients from out of state.

“We aimed for our guests to enjoy both the most advanced and cleanest equipment,” Thurmond asserts. “Our pods are fully plumbed, which is crucial for consumers to inquire about when looking for facilities providing these services. Otherwise, the water may be recycled or reused, merely filtered before use with multiple patrons.”

Services offered in salons may help alleviate issues like dermatitis, dandruff, psoriasis, and other scalp conditions, but it’s wise to consult with a board-certified dermatologist first, especially regarding hair thinning or loss. Additional guidelines and restrictions for treatment are available on Salon Elite’s website.

Be sure to discuss your aims and concerns at the start of your appointment, as the technician will provide personalized recommendations. “This service should ideally be scheduled monthly at a salon, in addition to being integrated into your daily routine,” Ratsaboutseua advises.

Standalone head spa treatments at Haven Salon & HeadSpa begin at $90, while those at Salon Elite start at $71. Other spas and salons in the metro area offering comparable services as add-ons and standalones include: Four Seasons Hotels Spa, Mahogany Beauty Bar & Head Spa, Notch + Mill, and Salon Two One Zero.
