Here’s what’s happening around St. Louis today — a new Cardinals general manager, the city’s winter game plan, a downtown food hall’s big opening weekend, and plenty to do tonight and this weekend.
Cardinals name Rob Cerfolio general manager
The St. Louis Cardinals promoted 34-year-old Rob Cerfolio to general manager on Friday. Cerfolio, an assistant GM since 2024 who previously spent a decade in Cleveland’s front office, will serve as the No. 2 under president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom, following Randy Flores’ departure for Houston. The Cardinals finished 77-85 in 2026 and missed the playoffs for a fourth straight season.
Why it matters: Cerfolio is Bloom’s first No. 2 and the club’s first GM in two years — a key hire as the front office rebuilds around its young core.

City unveils winter weather plan, more Code Blue shelter space
Mayor Cara Spencer and city partners announced this year’s winter weather and snow removal plans, built on lessons from the 2026 winter after-action review. The plan prioritizes clearing designated snow routes, with new hires, salt stockpiles, plowing dry runs and a Snow Command Center already in place. The city is also entering its second year of Code Blue, with more shelter space for unhoused residents, including on the Northside — and Spencer signed Executive Order 99 to lock the plans in for future winters.
Why it matters: After recent winters exposed gaps in snow response, the city says this year’s plan is built on a formal review, not just last year’s playbook.

Wash Ave Food Hall kicks off grand opening weekend
The Wash Ave Food Hall at 1122 Washington Ave. — a 14,000-square-foot venue in the former Copia/Reign space — celebrates its grand opening weekend November 6–8 after soft-opening earlier this week. The hall packs eight food concepts, from tacos and smashburgers to Puerto Rican sandwiches and Detroit-style pizza, plus two bars and a self-pour craft beer wall from 4 Hands Brewing Co.
Why it matters: It’s the biggest new food destination downtown has seen in a while — and a vote of confidence in the Washington Avenue corridor.

SLU and Mizzou renew their rivalry tonight
Saint Louis and Missouri renew their in-state basketball rivalry tonight at Enterprise Center — their first meeting since 2001. The Billikens welcome back Robbie Avila, the reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, who was cleared for a fifth season of eligibility this week after a court granted a preliminary injunction. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
Why it matters: A 24-year gap ends with both teams 1-0 — and with Avila back in uniform, it’s the marquee local sports event of the weekend.
Five things to do in St. Louis this weekend
The St. Louis International Film Festival runs through November 15, the Saint Louis Art Museum opens its fall exhibitions tonight with Gallery Laughs featuring comedian Guy Torry, Laumeier After Dark lights up the sculpture park on Saturday, and the Cherokee Street Jazz Crawl returns Saturday.
Why it matters: A full weekend slate — film, comedy, art after dark and live jazz — all within a few miles of each other.
