‘Robot Renaissance’ will bring a whimsical exhibit to City Museum

Nestled between a junkyard and a whimsical fantasy, robots are springing to life at City Museum.

The new exhibit, Robot Renaissance, is currently on display at this downtown attraction, featuring innovative robot sculptures crafted from everyday discarded materials. The exhibit will be open until May 31, perfectly coinciding with the VEX Robotics World Championship, taking place from April 21–30 at America’s Center.

Situated in the Beatnik Bob’s area of City Museum, the exhibit features creations by St. Louis artists Bill Christman and Dave Rudis. Their artworks transform found objects into whimsical, unique robots that fit seamlessly into the museum’s eclectic atmosphere.

Rudis, celebrated for his creative techniques, constructs each piece using salvaged materials gathered from the community. Items such as old lamps, kitchen handles, and scrap metal are creatively reimagined into intricate sculptures through welding and mechanical assembly.

“My body of work takes found everyday discarded materials and transforms them into artistic compositions,” Rudis stated in the announcement. “The majority of materials used were destined for landfills.”

This exhibit presents visitors with an opportunity to witness the intersection of creativity and sustainability, turning overlooked items into engaging and surprising art. It also aligns with the spirit of innovation emphasized by the upcoming international robotics competition in St. Louis later this month.

Housed in a former shoe factory, City Museum has a long-standing reputation for its interactive, artist-designed spaces that blend elements of a playground, gallery, and architectural marvel. The introduction of Robot Renaissance continues this legacy, encouraging guests to explore art in unexpected and delightful ways.

For families, art enthusiasts, and inquisitive visitors alike, the exhibit presents an opportunity to view robots from a fresh perspective—one inspired by imagination, ingenuity, and a touch of resourcefulness.
